It’s getting hot in here

by David Gluzman

It’s hot out – quit all your bitching.

It’s 12:30am, I’m outside riding my bike in shorts and a t-shirt truly enjoying the late evening outside. After a few hours I’m sweating bullets and ready for a shower. A month ago I was wearing a toque and a jacket. I wait all year to shed my winter fur, and when I finally do I’m exuberant.

“God it’s hot out!”

“It’s too damned hot outside”

“Turn on the AC”

For those of you that know Calgary that well, hot equals about 30 Degrees Centigrade, and cold is polar opposite (-30C). Since Calgary is near the mountains the weather changes faster than a busy downtown hooker changes clients. Thus weather is the number one conversation piece if you live around here. If it’s winter time, you’ll always hear people complain that it’s too cold (I’m right there with ’em), or be jubilant about the Chinook that rolled in and melted 2 feet of snow in a few hours. I don’t care if people talk about the weather, that’s fine; however I am annoyed when people complain about the heat in our very short lived summer.

Get outside and enjoy the summer already! If you’re too hot go get a slurpee or something.

I think a lot of people in this city get far to ingrained with the winter attitude that you should never leave a building. I’m not saying everyone is stuck inside, heck it’s great to see so many hot chicks walking down 17th ave till the wee hours of the night, but I do think Calgarians don’t appreciate the warmth that goes along with summer. Granted if you’re flipping burgers all day and the air conditioning is broke, then I feel your pain.

So I don’t really have a point here, and if I do it’s hanging together with a pair of broken shoe laces, but I enjoy summer so don’t bum me out saying it’s too hot. Granted if it’s 20 under I’m gonna bitch about it and how I can’t wait for summer.
